Maximum Range Is Not Typical Range
One of the most common questions about a two-way radio is, “How many miles will it reach?” The problem is that a single mileage number cannot describe every environment. Range can change dramatically between an open hilltop, a warehouse and a concrete building.
The Biggest Factors Affecting Range
Obstructions are usually critical. Concrete walls, steel, shelving, machinery, terrain and other buildings can weaken or block signals. Elevation can improve line-of-sight communication, while valleys and dense structures can reduce it.
Transmit Power
More transmit power can help in some situations, but wattage is not a guarantee of a specific distance. Antenna design, frequency, receiver performance and the environment all contribute to usable coverage.
Indoor Range
Manufacturers sometimes express business-radio coverage in square feet and floors. These figures are useful for comparing models but should still be treated as estimates. Motorola, for example, rates the RMU2080 at up to 250,000 square feet or 20 floors under stated conditions and explicitly notes that coverage varies.
Outdoor Range
Open terrain with clear line of sight can produce much greater distances than an indoor facility. Trees, hills, vehicles and buildings reduce that advantage. A radio advertised with a high maximum-mile figure should not be expected to achieve that distance in every setting.
How to Choose Correctly
Start with the environment: indoor, outdoor or mixed. Then consider building size, number of floors, terrain, existing frequencies and whether repeaters or a different radio technology are appropriate. For mission-critical applications, on-site testing and professional system design are preferable to relying on package claims.

Treat maximum range as a best-case comparison, not a promise. The best radio is the one that delivers reliable communication where your employees actually work.
